Join Melanie Wong as she explores Hawaii's hidden treasures! Episode 2 takes the Searching Paradise team to the Byodo-In Temple located in Oahu's Valley of the Temples in Kaneohe. Open since 1966, Hawaii's Byodo-In Temple is a replication of the original 950 year old Byodo-In Temple in Uji, Japan. The temple has been a popular destination for visitors wanting to explore Hawaii locations not found in most tourist guidebooks.
Here's a cool tidbit: The Byodo-In temple was also used as a filming location for the first season of the ABC series LOST (home of Sun's father)

This first forum, "Overview of Sustainability: What is it? What's in it for Business?", was conducted on January 26, 2007 and featured a panel discussion with David Cole of Maui Land and Pineapple, Mitch D'Olier of Kane'ohe Ranch and the Harold K. Castle Foundation, and Robbie Alm of Hawaiian Electric Company.
These breakfast seminars are a partnership between HB and HIPA, the Hawaii Institute for Public Affairs, and take a look at what Hawaii will look like in the year 2050, and how we can achieve sustainability to make sure the Hawaii we know and love is still around. The forums allow you to look at questions like: how do our actions
today impact the future we will have tomorrow and will we be leaving a better Hawaii for future generations?

Join Melanie Wong as she explores Hawaii's hidden treasures! Episode 4 takes the Searching Paradise team to Diamond Head Crater, located at the end of Waikiki Beach.
In the 1800's, British Soldiers mistook calcite crystals in the lava rock as diamonds in the soil - hence the name "Diamond Head". Visitors are able to hike to the rim of the crater (761 feet from the crater floor) through a designated trail featuring 2 sets of stairwells and unlit tunnels. Considered one of the easier trails to conquer, the view from the top of the summit is unparalleled.
Enjoy breathtaking views of Waikiki, Honolulu, and the Pacific Ocean!

Hawaii Business Forums Forum 2 - Land Use

Hawaii Business magazine and the Hawaii Institute for Public Affairs are sponsoring a series of breakfast seminars throughout 2007 to educate and engage the local business community in the critical importance of creating a sustainable Hawaii. This series, entitled the "Hawaii Business 2050 Forums on Sustainability," runs parallel to, but is separate and independent of, the State Legislature's Hawaii 2050 Sustainability Task Force. "Land Use Development: How Much or Too Much?" the second of eight planned forums, was held on March 16, 2007 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.

Panelists included: Mike Jones, Division President, D.R. Horton - Hawaii Division; David Bylund, Chair of the Urban Land Institute's Sustainability Committee and Brad Kurokawa, Deputy Planning Director, County of Hawaii

The desired outcome of the series is simple: our goal is to educate and engage the leaders of Hawaii's business community so that they understand what sustainability means, why it is good for business and critical to the well-being of our community, and what the role of the business community is in achieving a sustainable Hawaii by 2050. By the end of the series, we hope business leaders will want to participate in an action plan for sustainability that will preserve Hawaii as a wonderful place to live and work for our children and grandchildren.

Hawaii Business Forums Forum 3 - Renewable Energy

Hawaii Business magazine and the Hawaii Institute for Public Affairs are sponsoring a series of breakfast seminars to educate and engage the local business community in the critical importance of creating a sustainable Hawaii. This series, entitled the "Hawaii Business 2050 Forums on Sustainability,"
runs parallel to the State Legislature's Hawaii 2050 Sustainability Task Force. Our forum on renewable energy was held on May 11, 2007 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.

Panelists included: Alan Kennett, President and General Manager of Gay & Robinson Inc.; Andrew G. Hashimoto, Dean and Director of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at the University of Hawaii at Manoa; and Kelly King, Vice President of Pacific Biodiesel Inc.

Hawaii Business Forums Forum 4 - H2O is Life

Hawaii Business magazine and the Hawaii Institute for Public Affairs are sponsoring a series of breakfast seminars to educate and engage the local business community in the critical importance of creating a sustainable Hawaii. This series, entitled the "Hawaii Business 2050 Forums on Sustainability," runs parallel to the work of the Hawaii 2050 Sustainability Task Force. Our forum on "Water: The Silent Determinant for Growth" was held on July 27, 2007 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.

Panelists included: Dean Okimoto, president and owner of Nalo Farms; Manabu Tagomori, former deputy director at DLNR and director of water and natural resources at Oceanit; and Harry Kim, Mayor of Hawaii County.

The desired outcome of this series of forums is simple: our goal is to educate and engage the leaders of Hawaii's business community so that they understand what sustainability means, why it is good for business and critical to the well-being of our community, and what the role of the business community is in achieving a sustainable Hawaii by 2050. By the end of the series, we hope business leaders will want to participate in an action plan for sustainability that will preserve Hawaii as a wonderful place to live and work for our children and grandchildren.
